Teaching Negotiation Skills through Practice and Reflection with Virtual Humans

چکیده
Although representation of physical environments and behaviors will continue to play an important role in simulation-based training, an emerging challenge is representation of virtual humans with rich mental models (e.g., including emotions, trust) that interact through conversational behaviors as well as physical ones. The motivation for such simulations is training soft-skills such as leadership, cultural awareness, and negotiation where the majority of actions are conversational, and the problem solving involves consideration of the emotions, attitudes, and desires of others. The educational power of such simulations can be enhanced by the integration of an intelligent tutoring system to support learners’ understandings of the effect of their actions on virtual humans and how they might improve their performance. In this paper, we discuss our efforts to build such virtual humans, along with an accompanying intelligent tutor, for the domain of negotiation and cultural awareness.

Negotiation as a Challenge Problem for Virtual Humans
We argue for the importance of negotiation as a challenge problem for virtual human research, and introduce a virtual conversational agent that allows people to practice a wide range of negotiation skills. We describe the multi-issue bargaining task, which has become a de facto standard for teaching and research on negotiation in both the social and computer sciences. This task is popular as it...
متن کاملThe Benefits of Virtual Humans for Teaching Negotiation
This article examines the potential for teaching negotiation with virtual humans. Many people find negotiations to be aversive. We conjecture that students may be more comfortable practicing negotiation skills with an agent than with another person. We test this using the Conflict Resolution Agent, a semiautomated virtual human that negotiates with people via natural language. In a between-part...
متن کاملIntercultural Negotiation with Virtual Humans: The Effect of Social Goals on Gameplay and Learning
One innovative use of digital games is to facilitate learning skills with social components by simulating human behavior with virtual humans. We investigate learners' social goals to understand how they help learners learn intercultural skills from virtual humans in BiLAT, a virtual world that teaches cross-cultural negotiation. We hypothesize that students learn more when they approach the sim...

The purpose of this study was to examine how four teachers used the seven processes of videotape analysis to develop an analytic approach and reflective thinking towards their teaching. The study was organized within video clubs and was used to describe the interactions among four teachers about their experiences at a language institute. Data were gathered through videotaped recordings of lesso...
متن کاملTEACHERS AS REFLECTIVE PRACTITIONERS: A SURVEY ON IRANIAN ENGLISH TEACHERS’ REFLECTIVE PRACTICE
Reflective teaching, which has gained the status of an integral element of teacher pedagogy, is still an elusive concept, probably because it is merely attainable when teachers are provided with opportunities for building professional knowledge and for showing reflective teaching practices. The present study aimed at examining the English language teachers’ perception of their level of reflecti...
